Taverna
Stellina is different.
Ordinary
Cretan tavernas have white limewash walls, tube lamps, aluminum frame windows, and the personality of railway waiting-rooms.
At
Stellina's, guests sit in small groups inside an oversized living-room which is decorated with old paintings, buffets, books and other things.

|
In
wintertime a wood-burning stove with a giant pipe provides a comfortable temperature, and the audience mostly consists from local people to whom the sound Cretan cuisine at Stellina's ranks as very popular.
To
those newcomers from other countries of Europe who built their houses in the area during the recent years, Stellina's ranks as a quiet tip as well.
The more so as Nikos, Eva and Nikos II speak several foreign languages.
|
| |
Besides,
Nikos II has been educated as a confectioner in Germany and guests therefore can choose from several different fresh pies for dessert as well.
His
specialty is the Black Forest cake and he likes to explain that all essential ingredients are available on the scene.
Even the Black Forest cherry brandy which some time ago has been introduced to the permanent stock at LIDL's market in the neighbouring village of
Platanias.

Who
plans to go to Stellina's with several persons should call for reservation before as the locals love to celebrate their wedding, name-day and other parties at Stellina's frequently.
With
medium-size companies, one can already watch how Cretan people use to celebrate.
Many of them know to play a musical instrument and bring it along for the party, and as soon as everybody had his meal they produce folklore at first hand.
|
| |
In
springtime of 2006, Stellina's has been extended by an attached building.
Ample use of wood and natural stone makes this part of the restaurant very cosy as well.
There is one more wood-burning stove, and an open fireplace.
In
front of the new wing and in the rear there are terraces with shady trees (among others an extra large gumtree) and ornamental plants, and as soon as the weather in springtime allows it they move the tables and chairs from the living-room to the terraces.

 |
| |
 |
|
Since
2007 there is no day off anymore, and on Fridays they have folklore nights:
From approx. 10 p.m. on they play classic Greek music, including many songs which are known in other countries as well.
You
will find Taverna Stellina at Misiria, one of the eastern suburbs of
Rethymnon,
some 3 kms east of the city by the Old National Road.
It is located 200 meters from the western entrance of the village, on the road's north side.
